The Order of Christ is a dynastic order of the Imperial House of Kongo that was established in the 1570s under the reign of H.M. Alvaro I and expanded in 1607 under H.M. Alvaro II. Since the annexation after the Buta War (1913-1915) the order has continued to be a mainstay of Bakongo society. Its Grandmaster is currently His Highness Manuel Alvaro Afonso Nzinga, the Grand Duke of Nzinga.
